What Is OptiLight by Lumenis?

OptiLight by Lumenis is a noninvasive, light-based treatment for dry eye disease. This treatment can help reduce the inflammation associated with dry eye disease while heating the meibomian glands, stimulating the release of the oil vital for your tear film

Your meibomian glands are necessary for the function of your tear film, providing the oil needed to keep your tears from evaporating too quickly. When the glands in your eyes become blocked, the natural oils have difficulty getting to your eyes’ surface. Compromised meibomian glands can lead to irritated and dry eyes.

How Does OptiLight Work?

OptiLight is a device utilizing intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat dry eye disease. IPL therapy involves using light pulses to treat the blood vessels causing inflammation in your eye. These pulses heat your meibomian glands, removing blockages that allow oil to flow and help your tears lubricate your eyes for longer.

We apply light to the treatment area while protecting your eyes and skin. While effectiveness can vary from patient to patient, it can take approximately 4 treatment sessions for IPL to show improvements.

Increasing Tear Break-Up Time
Reducing the Amount of Demodex Mites & Bacteria Living Around Your Eyes
Eliminating Blood Vessels that Contribute to Inflamation
Improving Meibomian Gland Functionality

What to Expect

OptiLight typically involves a series of 4 treatments set 2–4 weeks apart. Each session takes about 10–15 minutes. Once the session is over, you can immediately get back to your day. No waiting time.

During your appointment, an eye care professional will apply coupling gel to the treatment area. Then, they’ll cover your eyes with shields.

Next, light pulses are focused on the skin below your eyes. You might feel warmth or heat on your skin, but otherwise, most patients experience minimal sensation.

Finally, your eye doctor will remove the eye shields and remove the coupling gel. OptiLight is also commonly followed up with meibomian gland expression or LipiFlow treatments.

Most patients notice improvements after 2–3 treatments.

Will the OptiLight Work for Me?

While OptiLight by Lumenis is an effective dry eye management solution, we want to make sure it’s right for you. We do not recommend this treatment if you:

  • Suffer from aqueous deficiency dry eye (rather than evaporative dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction)
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have severe scarring around your eyes

Ultimately, your doctor is the only person who can determine whether this option is right for you. During your next appointment, ask us if you are a good candidate for OptiLight by Lumenis.
